Catalan Voice Over Talent

I’m a native Catalan Voice Actor

Catalan voice over talent: a language of its own, not an accent

Hi! I’m David Morales, a native Catalan voice over talent and Castilian Spanish voice artist from Barcelona. If you’ve landed here, chances are you need a voice for the Catalan market, or someone has asked you for “Spanish with a Catalan accent” and you’re not quite sure what that means. Good news: you’re in exactly the right place, and in two minutes you’ll know precisely what your project needs.

Catalan is a language, not a Spanish accent

Let’s clear this up first, because it matters for your project: Catalan is not a dialect or an accent of Spanish. It’s a Romance language of its own, with its own grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, spoken by around 10 million people in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Andorra, where it’s the official language. And its map holds a couple of surprises: Catalan is also spoken in the south of France, in the area around Perpignan known as Northern Catalonia, and even in the Italian city of Alghero, in Sardinia, where a local variety of Catalan has survived since the 14th century. A Spanish speaker and a Catalan speaker use two different languages, the same way Italian and French are different languages.

So if your brief says “Spanish with a Catalan accent”, your client probably needs one of three things: a voice over in Catalan for the Catalan speaking market, a voice over in Castilian Spanish for Spain, or, sometimes, Castilian Spanish delivered with the characteristic traits of a Catalan accent, for a touch of local colour. I record all three natively, and I’ll be happy to advise you honestly on which one your project actually needs.

When your project needs Catalan

Catalonia is one of Spain’s strongest economic regions, and brands that speak to its audience in Catalan connect at a different level. That’s why advertising campaigns are produced in double version, why institutions communicate in Catalan, and why in-store audio, phone systems, e-Learning and dubbing are localised for the Catalan market. If your client operates in Barcelona, Catalonia, Andorra or the wider Catalan speaking area, a native Catalan voice is not a nice touch: it’s what makes the message feel local.

A native Catalan voice with the standard media accent

I record in central Catalan, the standard variety used by Catalonia’s public television and radio broadcasters: the neutral reference accent for advertising, corporate work and e-Learning. My Catalan voice has been heard in radio and TV commercials for the Catalan market, in campaigns for institutions and brands in Catalonia and Andorra, and in corporate projects, audio guides and dubbing.

One voice for both languages

Here’s the bonus international producers appreciate most: I’m natively bilingual, so I can record the Catalan and the Castilian Spanish versions of the same campaign with the same voice, the same tone and the same intention. One voice talent, one session, two languages, total brand consistency. Simpler production, faster coordination and a result that sounds right on both sides.
